Hanging Out in Indian Woods

Indian Woods is in Bertie County. When I first moved to Bertie County in the 70's this was a common sight. I worked for the County and made home visits and would frequently chat as the Matrons "pinned" their wash. I was fascinated by the washing machines which stood out on the back porches. They would release their wash water onto the ground next to the porch, which always had the most beautiful crop of Irises. The ringer was mounted on the top, two wooden rolling pins through which the clothes passed. It was a fascinating looking machine. 16x20"
